A Good Blog is Hard to Find

Stories of a Southern MFA student, teacher, and writer in, not-so-Southern, South Florida.

Feeling Accomplished

Today, I will finish my longest story to date. I’m not done with it yet, but I’m expecting it to be at least eighteen pages. I’m a slow writer. On a good day, a day where the waterfall of wine never ends, I can maybe churn out five pages. I will probably keep two or three of those pages. So I’m always leaping forward and then running backwards. Some days I won’t write anything at all except for a quick sentence about how I have nothing to write about. Emerson famously wrote, “The way to write is to throw your body at the mark when your arrows are spent.” And that’s what I’ve been doing lately. Yes, it’s exhausting and, yes, I don’t have many friends or much free time, but writing is more important than all of that. Plus, it’s really funny to imagine myself drunkenly running towards a red and white target; make that a Target with a capital T, because it’s even funnier to picture me throwing myself into my favorite shopping superstore.
